Why I moved to Austin, TX.

A few years ago we took a random birthday trip for my birthday to Austin, Texas. When I say we, I am referring to my boyfriend Jonathan. It wasn’t a far trip from Orange County, California and it looked like a fun city. In the back of our minds we also thought it would be a fun place to call home one day.

As most people do, we loved Austin right away. It was corky, had great food, and was a city with this amazing lake running through it. Walking down Lady Bird Lake just felt like home. We pictured our future; hiking, kayaking, eating, and just living. We wanted to work to live, not live to work. Which is actually one of Austin’s mottos. Jonathan was working 60+ hours a week at a job he hated, he felt no sense of accomplishment at the end of the day it was always just another dollar to him.

I was head first in Sunless Rae, doing everything I could to make it my full-time job. I also had a few setbacks and was looking to open a new salon by myself.

I found out I was pregnant with Braxton, and we put the move on hold until we had him. We continued searching for homes and dreamt of having our new little family in ATX. After having Brax, I opened a new salon 2 months later, which is the home of Sunless Rae Brea today. I found a business partner a few months later and we were on track for our move.

We took another trip to Austin, and looked at potential homes. We found one in South Austin, off of Slaughter, which we didn’t think needed too much work. We were very wrong, and have had to do SO MUCH work. We will eventually have to re-do every single room in our house. I will get into more detail about buying an older home vs. a new home later on. This is a completely different topic, which I have so much to say about.

Jonathan purchased our first home, and we stayed at his mom’s in Palm Springs for a month before we started the trek.

In October we were officially all living in Austin, and figuring out this new state and city. Well we still are, Texas is very different from California. We don’t have family or friends here and we both came out here with no real job. I had of course, Sunless Rae Brea, but I have never not done the spray tans. I was now just an owner and wasn’t really sure what that was going to look like.

It has been four months now, and it was by far the best decision we have ever made. We have grown so much in so many different ways. I have been challenged in ways I never thought possible, and I have had major setbacks. I am learning and growing. I have bad days and I have great days. I am trying to be a great mother, business owner and girlfriend. Life is hard no matter where you are at, I am just so thankful for the success I have had so far in Austin with Sunless Rae.

I am excited for the future and am excited for my family. My son is walking now, and it is approaching summer time. I can not wait to put his toes in Lake Travis and see his beautiful smile.

If you have a move you want to make or are thinking about making, my advice is to just go for it. I remind myself daily what is the worst that can happen? You move back and are exactly where you started at. My boyfriend has taught me a lot about taking risks and money is just money. He gives me so much confidence and security in being me and I can really do anything. Find your person, teammate, best friend and just go for it.

Xoxo,

Jess
